New Year’s Eve officially leading holiday for fatal Jacksonville Drunk Driving Accidents

drunkNew Year’s Eve may be the most popular holiday for alcohol consumption, and along with the rest of the holiday season, it’s also a leading time for fatal alcohol-related Jacksonville car crashes.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, travelers share the roads with more than 2.8 million drunken drivers with three or more drunken-driving convictions and, of those, more than half a million have five or more convictions.
The days leading up to New Year’s Eve are the busiest of the year for liquor stores.

There are also more fatal crashes involving legally drunk drivers around Christmas and New Year’s, according to data released this month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Around New Year’s, there are 54 such crashes per day, compared with the 36 on an average day for the rest of the year, according to the study.

Local company invent device to stop Jacksonville Auto accidents cause by texting teen drivers

A local company is trying to stop Jacksonville car accidents caused by texting teens.
Elyk Innovation Inc., a Jacksonville-based Web design company, can’t stop kids from text messaging. But they have figured out a way to stop them from texting on their cell phones while driving.

The application, which costs $9.95, is being called Textecution. It can be viewed and purchased at www.textecution.com.

For the moment, Textecution works only on the G1 Google phone. But they hope to bring the application to other types of cell phones in 2009, said Joe Lemire, chief innovator for Elyk Innovation.

A global positioning system determines when the phone is traveling more than 10 mph and the Textecution application then shuts down the texting function. If a teenager is in a car but not driving, he or she can push a button asking permission to text. The parent then gets a cell phone message asking if the child can text.

If the parent consents, the child can text for the next four hours.

Jacksonville drunk driving: 5 steps to stopping it this New Year’s Eve

kkEvery year on New Year’s eve people are injured due to Jacksonville drunk drivers. The following are steps we can all take to stop this from happening.
Step 1
Plan ahead. Discuss with your friends a plan for all of you to return home safely. You can pick a designated driver, arrange for someone who has not been drinking to pick you up or plan to use public transportation or a cab. Arrange to pick up the car the following day.
Step 2
Drive home a friend who has had too much to drink. That way you will know that your friend did not accept a ride from a stranger, drive herself or otherwise risk her life and the lives of others.
Step 3
Invite the person who has had too much to drink to sleep over. He won’t have to return for his car the next day, and everyone remains safe.
Step 4
Take the keys. Be calm and firm, but be certain to take the keys away from anyone who drinks too much and intends to drive. You can be proactive and take the keys early in the evening. If the person is sober, you can easily give back her keys.
Step 5
If you don’t know the person well, enlist help in getting the keys. Ask a bartender for help. Many bars have plans in place to deal with drivers who drink too much, especially on New Year’s Eve. Do not hesitate to ask a friend, a host or a family member for assistance.

Funeral Director convicted of removing body parts without permission

A former funeral director in suburban Rochester was convicted Friday of removing body parts without permission from 17 corpses.
Jason Gano, 32, was the first of seven people to stand trial here on charges of illegally dissecting skin, bone and other parts from three dozen bodies being prepared for cremation at three Rochester-area funeral homes in 2005. During a monthlong trial, the defense argued that an unscrupulous biomedical company in New Jersey run by Michael Mastromarino sent Gano forged documents indicating relatives had given their consent. But prosecutors countered that Gano systematically allowed Mastromarino’s employees to loot bodies without permission.

After two days of deliberations, a jury found Gano guilty of illegal-harvesting charges relating to 17 of 23 corpses from which body parts were turned over to Fort Lee, N.J.-based Biomedical Tissue Services. He could draw up to 10 years to 20 years in prison at sentencing on Jan. 16.
Biomedical Tissue Services operated its only satellite office in the Rochester suburb of Brighton and paid funeral homes a standard fee of about $1,000 to lawfully harvest body parts from a donor corpse.
